400 strips of poplin have been sewn together to make the pleated skirt, symbolizing each year of Turkish dominion over Greece. 25 meters of fabric have been bound together and hand sewn piece by piece by Naoussa’s -Greece’s heroic town- traditional artisans.
Boasting a long history, the fustanella today is associated with the costume worn by the Evzones, the National Guards stationed in front of Parliament. King Otto, king of the Greeks in 1833, declared the fustanella the national costume of Greece. Ever since it has become a symbol of Greek national pride.
